EPOX-Z NRG Offers Solution to Destructive Ponding Water on Roof Surface

March 16, 2011

Ponding WaterNorwell, MA – Ponding, or standing water on roofs continues to be a major concern to building owners, designers, and professional roof consultants. Long-term ponding water is one of the most destructive conditions that can adversely affect the life cycle of a flat roof system.

In most cases, professional roof consultants design and build roof systems to ensure positive drainage. And, general flat roof maintenance includes getting rid of ponding water. However, rainwater ponds still occur, and can have adverse effects, including deformation of the deck structure, penetration of moisture through the membrane into the roof system, damage to the roof surface attributed to freeze/thaw cycles, growth of algae and vegetation, and accelerated erosion and deterioration of the membrane.

Until now, the roofing industry’s coatings have failed miserably in terms of performance. While ponding water can be detrimental to most roof membranes, EPOX-Z NRG™ is the ONLY ZEROVOCs Cool Roof coating that has been tested to resist ponding water.

“Acrylic coatings deteriorate from the sun’s u/v rays and acids (acid rain). When wet with water for a period of 48 hours, acrylic coatings can begin to deteriorate,” offers Tony Camarota, CEO of EPOX-Z Corporation. “As a result, acrylic coatings do not adequately address the well documented problem of ponding water on roofs.”

“We heavily invested in R&D before introducing EPOX-Z in 2009, incorporating the flexibility of acrylics with the strength of epoxy. Our unique coating solutions are engineered to withstand ponding water problems on all roof systems.”

In an article in Professional Roofing magazine, James R. Kirby warns that “ponding water may not be defined in a manufacturer’s warranty. Some warranties simply state that damages resulting from ponding water (or inadequate drainage) are not covered.”

Camarota advises that building owners and professional roof consultants should review the manufacturer’s limitations of warranty closely to make sure their investment is protected. “EPOX-Z, with a permeability rating of 0.133, is unaffected by ponding water and does not exclude ponding water from it’s warranty.”

EPOX-Z NRG™ offers an alternative to roof replacement, while also delivering the financial benefits and energy-saving performance of a cool roof coating. EPOX-Z NRG™ Cool Roof Coating provides long-term roof protection from the elements, extended roof life and energy savings in one coat—and at a fraction of the cost of roof replacement.
